Our Story
Meet Sandra Bennett, Founder
Sandra (Sandy), discovered a love of plants and a started developing her green thumb as a young adult. She considers working with plants highly therapeutic and her peaceful place.
It all started in Florida in the mid 70’s when Sandy found a small vacant shop and took the plunge. Florida was a great environment for learning about tropical foliage and plant life. As her love of plants grew, so did her knowledge and business. In 1983, Sandy came home to west Michigan, opened her greenhouse in Mattawn, and continued to grow her business serving southwest Michigan clients.
The name, Shady Lady, was inspired when Sandy saw two beautifully intertwined trees that created a haven of shade. The name stuck and the business has continued to flourish.
Our Plants and Greenhouse
Why tropical plants? Plantscapes took off in the early 80’s and greenhouses grew plants specifically for interiors. Tropical plants in your space help to humanize an otherwise sterile environment, add warmth to your space, cleanse the air, and add a warm finishing touch.
We maintain a large inventory in our local 6,000 sq. ft. greenhouse. Our plants thrive in a temperature controlled environment, with sub irrigation being a main source of hydration. We also have a some bird and frog friends living in our greenhouse who love the space, too! 🙂
Our greenhouse is also equipped with a staging/design area and loading docks. All deliveries go through our local greenhouse.
